You can help stop Uwe Boll!

Friday, April 11, 2008

I was browsing the CAD forums today and saw this thread about a petition to stop Uwe Boll from making more movies.

First off, the link to the petition is :

http://www.petitiononline.com/RRH53888/petition.html

I signed it and was #182523.   Supposedly if this reaches 1 million signatures, Uwe Boll will stop making movies.  If you don’t know who he is.  Check out his imdb profile.  I personally don’t think his movies are complete crap, but I do agree that he usually has almost no understanding of the games he tries to turn into movies.  Postal looks pretty damn funny, but I don’t know if it’ll be another let-down or not.

Anyway. Go sign the petition!  Only 817,477 signatures are still needed!

George Romero’s Resident Evil Movie Script

Tuesday, January 8, 2008

george_romeroGeorge Romero, the guy behind most of the great Zombie movies, originally wrote a script for the movie portrayal of Resident Evil.

Night of the Living Dead

Dawn of the Dead

Day of the Dead

Land of the Dead

Originally, Romero was set to write the theatrical version of Resident Evil, but there were conflicts of interest with the director.

EXT JILL’S APARTMENT MORNING

…JILL, heavily ARMED, in UNIFORM, wearing a beret that has an insignia… S.T.A.R.S. She rushes down the front path and jumps into A HUMMER with THREE OTHER TROOPERS on board. The vehicle pulls instantly away…

…leaving Chris, looking through the window, puzzled, angry, and very much wounded.

I was browsing through ZombieReportingCenter dot com and came across this article which led me to the script.  I remembered hearing from a friend that Romero was supposed to write or direct Resident Evil but I never read the script or knew anyone who had.

George Romero’s version of the movie starts out completely different.   It starts with some mishaps in a lab being watched through a video screen, then cuts to Chris Redfield feeding some eagles.  After seeing something that freaks him out Chris goes back to Jill Valentines apartment and gets in bed with her.  They talk about how alone they are and then eventually Jill wakes up before Chris because she gets a call from S.T.A.R.S and has to leave.

Oh, and there was something to do with a guy and horses somewhere in that sequence..

EXT THE FOREST MORNING

DEEP IN THE HEART OF THE MIST... THE HUMMER bounces over
non-roads and stops fifty yards from...

...A PAIR OF IRON GATES, each wrought with the letter "A".
Beyond, the shifting fog offers momentary glimpses of...
A MANSION. Huge. Like Xandau. THE TROOPERS, amazed,
climb out and approach the gates.
It looks like they're still going to the Mansion!
A deep, animal SNARL comes from the woods. The troopers
raise their weapons as they peer into the underbrush. The
fog keeps sunlight from penetrating. The forest is a maze
of dark shadows. Leaves flutter. Limbs SNAP. Then...

DARK SHAPES can be seen moving, circling. A half-dozen
of them. Maybe more. Jill whips out a transmitter and
quickly types an access code.
It didn't take long for the suspense to start building up.
After this scene it goes to some more recognizable characters like Wesker and Barry Burton.Chris gets out of bed, Helicopters land outside on the street of Raccoon City and attempt to evacuate everybody.

Chris beats up some guards, saves a sheriff and goes to his. . farm? I guess the guy with the horses was running Chris’s farm for him.  The old guy’s laying on the ground dying next to three of the horses that are also dead.

Barry looks worried. His instincts are asking... "We might
need... 'help'". Against what? We only see this in his eyes,
he says nothing as...

...Wesker leads the team through the woods, unaware of...

...CHRIS, following behind, crouching around trees and
bushes, not a trained commando, but comfortable with the
land, a natural warrior using ancestral instincts.

Chris makes his way through the woods and follows the S.T.A.R.S team members that just landed.  This is only about page 16 of the script, but so far it seems like it would have made a pretty decent movie.

Go over to the Movie Script Place and read the rest of the script.  I might finish reading it all and review it some point in the future but for right now I’ll leave that up to you guys.

Ubuntu: hellanzb for easy downloading from newsgroups

Saturday, December 1, 2007

Preface

This guide is written for Ubuntu or any debian-based distro of Linux; Mainly because I’m lazy and decided to use apt-get.
I’m also not going to explain newsgroups or .nzb files in general right now. I might write a follow-up for that later. I do however recommend the use of Giganews.

  • One: I get a small discount if you use my referral to sign up.
  • Two: It’s only $20 for the first month with unlimited download, 20 connections, and SSL.
  • Three: It’s the best usenet provider I’ve found so far and is able to max out my connection. Way faster than BitTorrent.

Update:   Astraweb is offering a special.    $11/mo for the life of your account.   I’ve been using them for several months with no complaints.    If you’re looking for the best deal, you may want to try Astraweb.

Hellanzb preview 1

What is HellaNZB?

Here’s a description straight from their website:

hellanzb is a Python application designed for *nix environments that retrieves nzb files and fully processes them. The goal being to make getting files from Usenet (e.g.: Giganews Newsgroups) as hands-free as possible. Once fully installed, all thats required is moving an nzb file to the queue directory. The rest; fetching, par-checking, un-raring, etc. is taken care of by hellanzb.

Installation of HellaNZB

  1. Open a terminal or connect to your server using SSH.
  2. Use apt-get to install the prereqs :
    sudo apt-get install rar unrar par2 python-dev python-twisted python-pyopenssl wget tar screen
  3. Download hellanzb and extract it. (Check the website to get the latest version)
    cd ~ ;
    wget http://www.hellanzb.com/distfiles/hellanzb-0.13.tar.gz ;
    tar xvf hellanzb*tar.gz ;
    cd hellanzb-0.13
  4. Install it (requires root access)
    sudo python setup.py install
  5. Copy the configuration file
    sudo cp /usr/etc/hellanzb.conf.sample /usr/etc/hellanzb.conf
  6. Edit the configuration file (replace vim with editor of choice)
    sudo vim /usr/etc/hellanzb.conf

    1. Make sure you configure the server information in the .conf file.  It’s pretty self explanatory and gives examples.
    2. If you’re planning to use SSL; make sure you enable the SSL option and change the port from 119 to 443.
    3. Set the PREFIX dir to something like /home/username/ or /mnt/storage/hellanzb/
  7. That’s it.  You can download a .nzb file and put it in PREFIX_DIR/nzb/daemon.queue/ and if hellanzb is running, it will automatically start processing the .nzb file and then download its contents.   Start hellanzb like this:
    hellanzb.py
  8. Once it finishes downloading a file.  It’ll check to make sure it’s all there and repair it using PAR if it needs to, then unrar it and copy the extracted content to PREFIX_DIR/usenet. It’ll also delete the .rar and .par files once it’s done with them.

Make Hellanzb startup on boot as an init script

I found this init.d script on the ubuntu forums that basically starts hellanzb in a screen session at boot.

  1. Download my slightly modified init.d script
    wget http://www.thesh17.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/hellanzb ;
  2. Copy and chmod the script
    sudo cp hellanzb /etc/init.d/hellanzb
    sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/hellanzb
  3. Set it to run on boot
    sudo update-rc.d hellanzb defaults
  4. Edit the init.d script to run hellanzb as your user(IMPORTANT)
    sudo vim /etc/init.d/hellanzb

    1. Change HELLAUSER=yourusernametorunhellanzbas to reflect your username.
  5. Start hellanzb to see if it all worked
    sudo /etc/init.d/hellanzb start

Alternate Method to start on boot

If you get any errors. Just add this line inside /etc/rc.local and change $HELLAUSER to whatever your username is.

su -c '/usr/bin/screen -S hellanzb -d -m /usr/bin/python /usr/bin/hellanzb > /dev/null 2> /dev/null' $HELLAUSER

Now then.  You should be all set.  Just use SFTP or one of the web interfaces to hellanzb and download .nzb files into the queue folder.

Hitman: The Movie : The Trailer

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

I completely forgot to post this video the other day.

Here’s the first trailer for Hitman: The Movie

It doesn’t have Jason Statholm or Vin Diesel in it.  Both of them look more like 47 than this guy, but oh well.  Hopefully it’ll be a badass movie anyway.

Hot Fuzz from the people who made Shaun of the Dead

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

I never heard of this until today, but it’s awesome. The guys who created Shaun of the Dead made this movie, Hot Fuzz. It’s not set to release here in the US until April 20th I think, but it’s already out in other places.

The best part is it stars the same two guys from Shaun of the Dead, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. These guys:

I wanna see it.

28 Weeks Later

Friday, March 30, 2007

Remember back in 2002 when 28 Days Later came out? It was a badass zombie movie with rage infected monkeys and everything.

“His fear began when he woke up alone. His terror began when he realised he wasn’t.”

There’s a sequel coming May 11th called 28 Weeks Later. It has a new director and as far as I can tell, the star of the first movie isn’t in this one, or at least isn’t a star again. It takes place 28 weeks later(after the Rage Virus), and the United States thinks it’d be fun to claim they’ve won the war against infection, so begin rebuilding Britain. I can’t wait ’til it comes out. Watch the trailer below, or click here for a better quality version.

“Britain has been emptied. There’s nobody there. It’s completely dead. And six months later the Americans arrive to reboot it back up again. But, of course, something goes wrong…”

I’ve been listening to the background music on their website for a while; it’s pretty neat.
