Don’t buy gas on May 15th (today)?

Tuesday, May 15, 2007

gassGas prices are at a new record high and there’s a bunch of chain-letters going around email, myspace, text messages and whatever else kinda like this one:

DO NOT PUMP GAS ON MAY 15TH…

On May 15th all myspace members are to not go to the gas station in protest high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places. There are 72,110,073 members currently on the network, and the average car takes about 20 to 30 dollars to fill up. If all myspace members did not go to the pump on the 15th it would take $2,163,302,190.00 out of the oil companys pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the oil industry for at least one day.

If you agree (which I cant see why you wouldn’t) repost this bulletin repost it with “Don’t pump gas on May 15th, 2007”

Everyone has a nice idea and it’s great they want to lower gas prices and reduce fuel consumption, but this isn’t going to work. The government and whoever we get gas from isn’t going to care if we don’t buy gas today. Everyone probably already filled their tanks up yesterday, or will tomorrow. All it did was shift the day a few people buy gas.

From EnviromentalBlogging.org:

THE ONLY WAY TO AFFECT THE PRICE OF GASOLINE IS TO CREATE A LONG-TERM DECREASE IN DEMAND.

If you want more proof, go read this page. There was no nationwide gas-out in 1997 and when there actually was one (in 1999) it did nothing to lower the prices.

4. Whether the total impact was a half-billion, 3 billion, or 10 billion dollars, the sales missed due to a one-day consumer boycott wouldn’t hurt the oil companies one bit. Think about it. Every single American who doesn’t buy gas on Tuesday is still going to have to fill up their tank on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, making up for Tuesday’s losses. Sales for the whole week would be normal, or very close to it.

I won’t buy gas today, but that’s only because I don’t need to. Gas is overrated anyway.

And if you live on the west-coast, I’d recommend buying a bike.
